Every man needs to accentuate what he has on. You can go with the everyday rings, necklaces, and bracelets. However, these items are steered more towards women. Men have been granted with items like watches, pocket squares, cuff links when you wear a french cuff shirt, and socks. These are the items I want to focus on here. These are the items that will truly allow you stand out once you have your basic suit put on. I dont mention belts because I suggest a simple black leather and brown leather belt be worn with all outfits as a basic. If you really want to branch out on your belt look, let me know and I will put together a post for you.
Pocket Squares
The pocket square is an essential accessory. You have to make sure that you coordinate this with your tie. If you aren't wearing a tie (hopefully this is only on a casual Friday), then the pocket square needs to coordinate with your shirt and sport coat. They key importance is that the base color of your pocket square matches the base color of your tie. If your tie has an in depth pattern like paisley, be sure your pocket square has a lighter pattern like dots. Because the pocket square is spaced from your tie by your pocket square, it is okay for these patterns to clash slightly.
Cuff Links
It is hard to wear a set of cuff links that are crazy since there are not many out there that are crazy. It is good to have a base set of silver and gold. These you want to match towards your other jewelry and if possible to your coat buttons. Color on top of the silver and gold is acceptable as long as it matches the color of your tie and pocket square while also matching the theme of your outfit.
Socks
This is the area where I have fun every day. My socks always have personality and I hope yours does too. I have uncovered some amazing sock brands since I have started this blog: Jonathan Adler, Soxiety, Alexander McQueen, Ted Baker, and Paul Smith. Some of these brands are English brands. Which is nice because they have a far more eclectic and what I view as superior fashion sense than we have here in America. They are always a step ahead of our trends. Stripes, argyle, and patterns. You name it, a sock can have it. You really want to match your base color to your suit color and shoe color. The sky is the limit with socks, so have fun!
Watches
There is never enough to say about watches. They are a cornerstone of your outfit. They can turn a classy look into a sporty look. A sporty look into an Urban look. If you are going for a certain look, always make sure you have a watch to match it. A watch is important to me. A gentleman should never pull out his phone. Look at your watch if you need to pass the time. You should have three bands in your arsenal: leather, rubber, and metal. The band really helps dictate your classy/sporty/urban style. Another feature of the watch that sways the style is the face. Big and Bulky tends to make you look more urban/trendy. Your watch band should match the color of your shoes/belt unless it is metal. Metal bands allow you to wear them with nearly any outfit unless the watch face is a crazy off color.
There you have it fellas. Your corporate style foundation has been set. The possibilities are endless as time goes on. Step up your suit game, shoe game, tie game, or whatever to keep people remembering you. Let your style and dress let people know you are here for business and will be remembered. You aren't going anywhere. So what is the first impression outfit you put together?
